Back in 2013, we planted a small pine fir tree in our garden on Tiree, never quite sure if it would take root in the island’s salty air and windswept climate. More than a decade later, we were surprised this month to see, it no longer looks dead, but instead it’s thriving beautifully — a rare sight on Tiree, where such trees seldom survive the harsh Atlantic conditions.
Sheltered behind a stone wall, the little pine has steadily adapted, growing slightly stronger each year and bringing a touch of green woodland charm to the island’s coastal landscape. Strangely, it has spread, taken root with a further two little trees springing up nearby, perhaps being fed by the nearby stream. For us, this little tree stands as a quiet symbol of resilience and hope, proving that with the right care and a bit of shelter, even the most unlikely plants can flourish here.
