Suspicious German Motorboat, 1910

We’ve been looking at Tiree history. In August 1910, a sensational story was circulating about a mysterious motorboat off the West Coast of Scotland rumoured to be piloted by 4 German men and 1 Norwegian.

The sailors had called in at the Isle of Tiree and invited on board, an experienced Tiree fisherman to show them around the coast. Stating they were interested in sites of wrecks, they also took a great interest in the landing areas and general coastline itself, lingering on the Atlantic facing side.

The promised reward for the fisherman was handsome, so he was most talkative, readily complying and with answers to all questions. He was on board for 4 days and suspected one of the German men was a professional diver having carefully written down his previous dive histories. The fishermen thought perhaps they were ‘treasure hunters’.

The foreigners also inspected Skerryvore lighthouse, up close.

They slept on board and after 4 days, they dissapeared from the area as quickly as they had arrived. It was all fairly suspicious and in the coming weeks thereafter , the islander began to suspect a rouse, and informed authorities that they may have been spies.
