We’ve been looking at Tiree’s history. This next story is from just over 100 years ago and was documented in the London Chronicle newspaper on 30th December 1924.
A Glasgow girl who ran away from service in Scarinish, in the isle of Tiree, on December 6th, after much concern was found safe on December 19.
Between these dates she had lived on:—
Two small packages of biscuits.
A jar of marmalade—eked out with turnips.
Hope of finding the girl had been almost given up, when she was discovered by her employer’s son in a hay loft. She had taken refuge at first in an unoccupied house a short distance away. A missing watch, subsequently found, was the cause of her disappearance.
Do you know more? Who was the girl? What became of her? Our image recreates the story.
