There’s something beautifully Scottish about seeing thistles growing outside. I’m not so keen on seeing them in my garden at home, but here, outside The Lodge Hotel on the Isle of Tiree, they look magnificently Scottish!
Bold, hardy and instantly recognisable, the thistle is one of Scotland’s most famous national symbols. It represents strength, resilience and protection — qualities that feel very much at home on Tiree, where island life is shaped by the sea, the wind, the weather and a strong sense of community.
Set against Tiree’s wide open skies and coastal landscape, the thistles are a lovely reminder of Scotland’s natural beauty and heritage. They may look delicate in bloom, but they are tough, proud and enduring — just like the island spirit itself.
Have you spotted the wide variety of flowers growing wild on Tiree?
