We’ve been researching some Tiree history. As the 20th Century got underway, it may surprise you to know that the Isle of Tiree was up for sale. From 1902, a newspaper report in the Liverpool Echo said,
“The Central News London correspondent wires that the Duke of Argyll has again advertised the island of Tiree is up for auction, to take place in London on July 14 [1902]. About a year ago Tiree was put on the market, an advertisement being inserted in a New York paper, but there were no offers. The island has an area of 21,741 acres, a population of 2,500, and a rent roll of £4,600. It is noted for its salubrious climate and magnificent shooting. Tiree has been in the possession of the Campbells of Argyll since the days of Columba.
