Byre Tidy Up

Needless to say, like some buildings on Tiree, our byre never fared well during recent ‘Storm Amy’. The old, grey guttering blew off completely along with some of the rotted fascia boards. Our unused byre has been needing some attention in recent years and hadn’t been painted since 2021.

Yesterday we ripped off the remaining fascia boards and took them and the guttering to the tip. Then fixed new fascia boards, painted them black, and fixed new black upvc guttering (with many clips to stand the Tiree Winters!). It’s a bit late in the year to be painting outside, but we had a dry day and after scrubbing the wall, whitewashed the byre walls.

This vacant byre is attached to Struthan Cottage and can be seen from the garden and roadside, so we wanted to make sure it looks ok. For some time now, our intention has been to expand Struthan Cottage using the byre, but ensure it isn’t let out separately, remaining one detached house, i.e part of a larger Struthan Cottage. We have some much grander plans next Winter for this byre when our builders from the mainland arrive to construct a new roof, windows and door.

No doubt it’ll need painted again after that!!
