For centuries, Tiree’s crofting tradition has shaped its landscape and community. Crofting, a small-scale farming system unique to the Highlands and Islands, allowed families to survive on the island’s fertile machair, growing oats, barley, and potatoes while keeping cattle and sheep.
This lifestyle fostered a deep connection to the land and sea, with crofters working together to cut peat, gather seaweed for fertiliser, and share harvest tasks. Although challenging, crofting brought a sense of resilience and community spirit that still echoes across Tiree’s windswept fields today.
Many traditional blackhouses have vanished, but some remain, reminding us of the generations who lived simply, close to nature, with the Atlantic winds singing across their roofs.
Have you explored any of Tiree’s old crofting ruins?
