Few know that Tiree played a vital role during WWII. The flat landscape and reliable winds made it a perfect base for RAF operations, with Tiree Airport opening in 1940. Coastal Command aircraft flew Atlantic patrols to protect vital convoys from U-boat attacks.
The island’s quiet beaches and crofts became the backdrop to critical wartime activity, with hundreds of personnel stationed there, building runways, huts, and radar installations. Tiree’s skies once echoed with the engines of Liberators and Catalinas heading out on Atlantic missions.
Remnants of wartime bunkers and runways remain, reminding us of Tiree’s contribution to securing Allied victory while holding onto its peaceful island spirit.
