Buoy Adrift, 1932

We’ve been researching some Tiree history. When the Fleetwood steam trawler ‘Phrontis’ returned home on Thursday 28th January 1932 from the fishing grounds, she carried on her deck, a telegraph buoy belonging to the Western Union Telegraph Company.

The buoy which was two tonnes in weight was used to allocate a position when repairs were being done to the Atlantic cable. It was found on the previous Tuesday adrift off Barra Head, near Isle of Tiree.
