We’ve been researching Tiree history. From John Bull Magazine, Saturday 9th March, 1918:
“The Duke of Argyll owns large tracts of uncultivated land. The Isle of Tiree is his, the small holdings thereon were once marked off by the Board of Agriculture (Scotland) but the scheme somehow fell through.”
“The islanders of Tiree are now growing food without permission and the Duke has interdicted them by law (somewhat unfair during time of war). They take no notice. [of the interdiction]. It would be more graceful on the part of the his Grace were he to open up the land to willing cultivators , putting the nation’s need before a ‘ducal fancy’.“
