Continuing our look into Tiree’s interesting history. Some of our research. In 1894, a farmer on Tiree made the significant trip to Castle Douglas, Lanarkshire taking a whopping 500 Balephetrish lambs to market.
At time of writing this, this all happened 131 years ago, so you can imagine the transportation, time and effort this would have taken. The logistics of feeding the animals whilst they travelled on inadequate boats, on tracks, rather than macadam roads and in vehicles that were not mechanised!
It was noted the top half bred lambs had made the sea and road journey to ‘Wallet’s new Auction Mart’ and that “further consignments” back on Tiree were available if needed.
