Delving into some more Tiree history. As the Second World War approached its end, thoughts turned to further improving Tiree’s infrastructure. A new road connecting Cornaig to Balevulin was proposed at a length of 1.38 miles.
Argyll County Council invited tenders from local contractors for the work, which involved clearing, fencing, drainage, earthworks, culverts, carriageway and other works.
Plans and drawings could be inspected in the Councils’ Lochgilphead offices from 19th March 1945. A few days later on 23rd March, an Engineer met with prospective contractors at Cornaigmore School and walked them over the planned route.
Today, this section of road is surfaced with macadam and leads from the junction to the school, around the loch, past the turnoff for Kilmoluaig and to a T junction near Balevulin.
