More Tiree history, researched by us last year. From the Sunday Mail , 18th April 1965. “When children at Ruaig School on Tiree become thirsty, they fill a cup from….a bucket of water rather than taps!”
“In fact, said one mother, the conditions at Ruaig school are appalling. There is no running water.”
“Mrs Joyce Littlejohn, 34 of Kirkapol, whose son Iain 9, and daughter Joyce 5 ar both pupils added, ‘the children drink out of a bucket with one cup shared by all pupils. Another thing is there isn’t adequate shelter outside for them.The winds in Tiree are practically gale force all the time.”
Mrs Littlejohn and her husband John 43 (superintendent of a local power station) came to Tiree from Glasgow more than 2 years ago. She said, ‘I believe most islander share my same thoughts’.
An Argyll education official said, “Lack of Water in Tiree is an old story, not every school has a pump in Argyll. A regional water scheme will soon ultimately extend to Ruaig and once there is enough money, a big modern school centrally situated will be built the small ones and their issues will be closed.”
