A hobby of mine is history and in my home town, I have the label of being a part time historian. Turning my hand to Tiree’s history is something I’ve always wanted to do. Original poetry from some 137 years ago. From the Oban Telegraph Friday 31st August 1888. All we know is a man called Dughall seems to have been fair charmed by this Tiree woman. He writes:
“By the sea beaten shore I set out for a stroll,
surveying the bitlows in their invading roll.
When a damsel so handsome came walking to me,
And I knew by manner, of no low degree.
We changed salutations, then with her I walked,
And thus she addressed me, as together we talked
By your dress and your language it seems unto me
You must be a stranger in the Isle of Tiree.
Bat just now we must part, for that there, is your road,
And ’tis this one that leads to my parents abode;
But our house and our hall will bid welcome to thee
As long as you remain in the Isle of Tiree.
Opportunity came soon, and onward I strode
To see this young lady and her place of abode;
And I found all so tidy and in harmony
With the diligent hand of the maid of Tiree.
With her charms so attractive and sweet winning ways,
Her virtues surpassing all the bloom of my praise,
She is handsome and proper in every degree,
And no other can equal the maid of Tiree.
Her form, it is handsome ; she is gentle and kind,
Intelligent, modest, and exalted in mind;
He is sure to he happy, whoever he be
That will get by the hand the sweet maid of Tiree.”
Dughall.
