Tiree Sailor in Calcutta Shipwreck, 1892

We’ve been researching some Tiree history this week. In September 1892, the sad news arrived in Balemartin to Charles Campbell, that tragically, his son Charles had died at sea.

He had been in a shipwreck half way around the world where he had drowned. He was a promising, bright young man who had only left Tiree for sea in a promising sailing career two months earlier.

The ship “Anglia” was wrecked near Calcutta in the Hooghly River in August 1892, not arriving as a successful voyage. The vessel was a fine steamer of over 3,000 tons belonging to the Anchor Line. The passing of Charles Campbell deeply shocked the island and he is remembered here.
