Turtle washes up on Tiree

turtleRecently a dead giant turtle was found at West Hynish beach. Mrs Nancy Brown sent this picture into An Tirisdeach.

John Bowler, the resident RSPB man advised that the tutle was a “Leatherback” from the Carribbean and that it’s common for turtles to come up the Gulf Stream, feed on jellyfish and return home. As it had no obvious wounds, it may have died naturally and is believed to have been 80 years old! It was unsuitable for postmortem as you can see by the white spots on its shell, it had already started to decay. Amazing creature to have travelled so far and older than most residents of Tiree!
