Tiree’s Enhanced Broadband Service

It’s with some interest i read an article recently in An Tirisdeach about certain areas on Tiree not receiving a good broadband service, especially as we use Tiree Broadband for Struthan Cottage (where there is no problem with the signal). I’m sympathetic to this, as the problem highlighted seems to be in communities very nearby. Over the last 6 months, the UK has made huge strides towards ensuring broadband coverage in rural areas and in 2011 there have been some developments which may assist Tiree’s broadband being enhanced. There are definite and fast alternatives to using sky or tiree broadband. The answer is not with BT, who have a lot of catching up to do.

Last week a new technology offering rural areas and domestic residents within Europe access to KA-Sat has suddenly provided affordable broadband with a super 6mb download speed for only £25 a month. (now thats currently faster than me writing this in Glasgow).

KA-sat offers satellite technology, but updates the satellite experience that people may previously remember. Its much faster, much more reliable and affordable. You can read about it’s switch on last week here http://www.ispreview.co.uk/story/2011/05/31/eutelsats-10mbps-capable-ka-sat-broadband-satellite-enters-commercial-service.html

Just to confirm , this information is in the public domain. BBC reported the full story on 3rd June 2011. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-13616723

KA Sat – now offers residents of all Scottish Islands a service that rivals and in many ways surpasses those on the mainland. Ensuring a faster broadband service for our holiday guests, is definitely something i’ll be investigating.
