The Corncrakes will have benefited from the largely warm and still conditions on Tiree during June, but unknown in August with this wet weather we’ve had. However, we continue to hear their distinctive call all over the island in August. The final count this year was 392 calling males, very similar to 2008 and 07, suggesting numbers may be reaching a plateau, since the big increases from 2001.
The thriving corncrake population on Tiree accounts for 1/3rd of the total UK population of this rare bird. A resounding success for Tiree. There’s a little bird hide at Loch Bhassapol near Struthan Cottage where you can observe these birds fairly frequently.
